Here are your DIYbio events for the week.
On Sunday, join Brooklyn as they process black-and-white film (remember that?) using beer and coffee, and Oakland continues their Biohack Academy series with a course on culturing, as well as continuing on their Open Insulin, and outer space microfluidics projects, while Sunnyvale has teens showing other teens some basics of biology and biotechnology
On Monday, Charlottesville begins a two-week synthetic biology summer camp, Oakland continues its Biohacking Academy with a course on plasmid design and online databases, as well as continuing their Real Vegan Cheese project in collaboration with Sunnyvale.
On Tuesday, Amsterdam changes the venue of their Open Wetlab to Red Light Pet Shop pop-up location to explore their bio bank, Brooklyn has Oliver Medvedik, Ph.D. and Ellen Jorgensen Ph.D. teaching a course on designing guide RNAs for use in CRISPR, Buenos Aires, has a discussion by Gabriela Munguia on “bioimpresion” as an intersection of biology, 3-D printing, and art, Madison has a talk by Joshua Hyman on DNA sequencing, and Sunnyvale continues its plant bio research and quantum salinity detector projects.
On Wednesday, Amsterdam has a workshop exploring the superfood potential of their algae “pets”, Lausanne/Ranens has a various projects and organizations sharing their work, Oakland continues with their fun fermentation and Open Insulin projects, and Sydney continues with their ethylene biosensor iGEM project.
On Thursday, Buenos Aires hosts Pablo de Soto to talk about all sorts of things involving international hactivism and drones, including citizen science radiation mapping, and Sunnyvale continues their bioprinter project.
On Friday Singapore meets to share some improvised lab equipment and experiments, and Sunnyvale continues discussions about biohacking and climate change.
Finally, on Saturday Baltimore has Lisa Schifele Ph.D. teaching the Build-a-Gene series of courses, which include an introduction to CRISPR/ Cas9, Brooklyn has Oliver Medvedik, Ph.D.beginning a lab series on gene editing using CRISPR/ Cas9 (there is a prerequisite), and has Moira Williams conducting a workshop on making art from mushrooms and lichen, Oakland continues their evolved bacterial sunscreen project, in collaboration with Sunnyvale. Also on Saturday, Seattle has an introduction to light microscopy, and Sunnyvale begins a 3- session in-depth lab and lecture series on CRISPR/ Cas9.

Here are your DIYbio events for the week. On Sunday, Munich meets to discuss student projects in biohacking, New York has the last day of a big hackers conference, featuring biohacking talks by Nina Alli and Tom Keenan (and an assembly of the biohackers there at 5pm in Hoover on the 18th floor), Oakland continues their Open Insulin project, and Sunnyvale has a talk by Geoff Ivison on chimeric antigen receptor T cells and cancer treatment. On Monday, London hosts a talk by Joe Davis, resident artist of George Church‘s lab at Harvard, and Oakland continues their Biohacking Academy lectures. On Tuesday, Sunnyvale continues their quantum salinity detector project. On Wednesday, Amsterdam will explore their chromobacteria qualities and look at different inks produced by these these pets, Eindhoven has an open lab on building with organisms, Ghent has a meeting to discuss projects to use insects as a food source, and Oakland continues its Open Insulin project as well as furthering fun fermentation. Also on Wednesday, Sunnyvale continues their project on building a fluorescing microscope, Tokyo has a talk by Ilya Zakharov on neuroscience and art, and Vancouver has Atilla giving a talk on genetic modification. On Thursday, Cambridge continues their discussions on creating a biomakespace, Cork has demos of new commercial efforts of biohackers, Hong Kong has a talk by Professor King Chow on the detection of trace minerals in soil, London has Mark Haddon speaking with neuroscientists Uta and Chris Frith about their work on the neural basis of communication. Also on Thursday, London has Yannick Wurm discussing the discovery of a social chromosome in fire ants, and Sunnyvale continues their bioprinter project. On Saturday, Austin will have a demonstration on how to make probiotic foods, Baltimore will be at a Building with Biology event, Denver begins two days of hands on synthetic biology, Oakland continues working on their liquid-handling robot, and Sunnyvale continues their metabolic engineering coursework.

On Tuesday, Madison has an introductory meeting, and Sunnyvale continues work on their surface plasmon resonance quantum salinity detector. On Wednesday, Dublin has a talk/video on epigenetics, Columbus meets with Erin Monaco to discuss citizen science collaborations, Montreal meets to brainstorm before a hackathon, Oakland continues their fun fermentation work, as well as their Open Insulin project, and Sunnyvale continues building their fluorescing microscope. Also on Wednesday Dubrovnik starts their Science Underground Academy. On Thursday, Baltimore has a lesson on gel electrophoresis, Cambridge continues to plan their biomakespace, Denver carries out DNA isolation and sequencing practice while doing some amplification of the MTHFR gene, Hong Kong has an introductory talk about iGEM, Sunnyvale continues their bioprinter project, and Toronto continues their study of Herron & Freeman’s Evolutionary Analysis. On Friday, Baltimore has discussions about urban beekeeping and the bee microbiome, with mead makers, beekeepers, and Eli McComb, one Montreal group will be working on a hackathon, and another Montreal group will be doing a biohackathon. On Saturday, Sunnyvale conducts their metabolic engineering class.
