DIYbio events for the week of June 5

Here are your DIYbio events for the week.  On Sunday Oakland continues their Open Insulin project.  On Monday, its the last day to register for the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) hackathon happening August 3-5, and Oakland together with Sunnyvale continue their work on Real Vegan Cheese.  On Tuesday Amsterdam starts their collaborative project cycle, with an emphasis this month on plants.  Also on Tuesday, Montreal has Daniel Modeulevsky discussing the use of apple cellulose as a biomaterial for organ scaffolds, and Sunnyvale continues their quantum salinity detector project.  On Wednesday, Cambridge has a workshop on arduinos and sensors, Oakland continues their fun fermentation and Open Insulin projects, and Sunnyvale continues their florescence microscope project.  On Thursday, Baltimore has a planning session to build a spectrometer for some purpose (let Ryan Hammond explain), Brooklyn has Alondra Nelson speaking about how DNA has wound itself into the heart of contemporary social issues around race, Somerville has Dr. Elissa Hobert presenting a paper about modified RNA (modRNA) and its applications for treating disease,  Sunnyvale continues their bioprinter project, and Toronto has a study group of the book Evolutionary Analysis as well as discussion of a supporting paper.  On Saturday Amsterdam has a workshop guided by Maja Smrekar, Spela Petric, Mary Tsang, and Byron Rich on extracting and deploying your own hormones,  Oakland continues with their evolved bacterial sunscreen project, Seattle will be having a workshop where you can build a SpikerBox to monitor the action potential of neurons, and Vancouver is at a Mini Maker Faire

Here are your DIYbio events for the week.  On Sunday, Cambridge has Simon Hong speaking about Memory, and Durham has a show and tell, where they will be discussing collaboration with the NEIHS.  On Monday, Brooklyn demonstrates PCR and barcoding (pizza is involved as well), Cambridge has talks by Vitor Pinheiro on directed evolution as a tool for synthetic biology, and Alexander Taylor on artificial genetic polymers.  Also on Monday, Oakland continues their work on Real Vegan Cheese.  On Wednesday, Charlottesville does a walk-through of speed dating, where they isolate the senses and adjust the order of exposure to the sensory input, Los Angeles offers you the opportunity to start your own bio-art project, or collaborate with Lola Dompe on one of hers, Oakland continues their fun fermentation and Open Insulin projects, Seattle discusses genetic circuitry, Sunnyvale continues their work on building a fluorescence microscope, and Toronto has another Bioengineering, bio-production, and painting with bio-pigments session. On Thursday, Amsterdam has their Hack the Brain pre-event, Cambridge, GBR continues discussions on building a makespace, Cambridge, MA hosts a new generation of biotech startups, and Montreal has a plasmid transformation workshop and open lab.  Also on Thursday, Oakland launches an international effort to put mRNA expression assay hardware in space, Sunnyvale continues their bioprinter project, and Toronto continues their series on Bioengineering.   On Friday, Oakland is at Maker Faire and Toronto continues with their Bioengineering series.  On Saturday, Brooklyn has a workshop where electricity generated by muscle activity is measured and harnessed to do fun things, and Seattle has Kaelan Yu conducting a workshop on soap making.

Here are your DIYbio events for the week.  On Sunday, Austin has Justin Atkin as a guest speaker, and Oakland is continuing its work on Open Insulin, and its coursework on protein purification.  On Monday, Sunnyvale continues its work on building a quantum salinity detector using plasmon surface resonance.  On Tuesday, Amsterdam has their Ideation session for the next project cycle, and Denver will be co-making centrifuges and incubators.  On Wednesday, Brooklyn has a course preparing you for CRISPER/Cas9, including design of guide RNA, Oakland continues its fun fermentations and Open Insulin project, while Sunnyvale continues with its flouresence microscope project.  On Thursday, Brooklyn has a presentation by Dr. Ania Fryszkowska entitled “The Biology and Chemistry of Color”, Sunnyvale continues its work on bioprinting, and Toronto begins a study group on Herron & Freeman’s Evolutionary Analysis.  On Friday, Bethesda goes to a presentation on printable machines (informal robotics) by Jonathan Grinham, and Toronto begins a 5-day workshop on bioengineering, bio-production, and painting with bio-pigments.  On Saturday, Baltimore has a fun art and DNA event,  Oakland and Sunnyvale continue their evolved sunscreen project, Denver has a brainstorming session as they form an iGEM team,  Seattle has a fragrances and essential oils workshop led by Reitha Weeks, PhD, and Toronto continues its 5-day workshop on industrial biotechnology.
